World Sport in crisis?
Since Renault owned up to instigating the Formula 1 crash, since Harlequins the Rugby club faked a blood injury, since footballers were allowed to dive, be punished then have the punishment revoked, since Ben Johnson won the 1988 Olympic Gold high on drugs, since, since, since, the list goes on and on.
Will sportsmen and women ever learn, will they continuously be influenced by those above them to do the wrong thing for success, will they lie and cheat just so they can win that game, that race, that event? If sport was run as a Galactical tournament then those on Alpha Century would be laughing at the state of our current World sports.
Fortunately the good will always outweigh the bad, although those that do stray to the dark side always make sure that those around them also get put in the spotlight.
Pique Jr the former Renault Formula 1 driver was asked to crash last year in his racing car during the Singapore Grand Prix. A good, decent, down to earth sportsman would have said no, he didn’t and now he is just as much to blame as his Renault team are. One asks how many other teams in the set up have cheated this way, or who is even cheating at the moment.
The London rugby club Harlequins’ player Williams, who was asked to bite into a blood capsule by the management, could have said “no, I won’t do it”. Instead he smuggled the capsule on in his sock and started biting into a capsule to produce more blood than one of the Rambo films.
Cheating is unfortunately in our blood, whether it is a game of monopoly, Wall Street share dealing, a game of football or even on the playstation at home. People always want a small advantage over the other, and if it cannot be done through hard work, training, talent, natural skill then they will look at other avenues, unfortunately this in most cases means cheating.
Another small issue is for those that like to take bets on these types of events, will the best online bookmakers now refund all those that had bet on Pique winning? This is likely to open up a whole can of worms for the bookmakers who will quite rightly also feel cheated by the actions of certain individuals and teams.
Thankfully there are enough good sportsmen and women out there to make sport still a wonderful delight to watch but punishments on cheats must be more severe and wothout remorse. If someone crashes on purpose in Formula 1 then ban the team and driver for 5 years, full stop, no appeal nothing. The same should go for football divers, if no contact is shown on television replays then ban the player for 10 games, take the team out of the tournament. Players will be desperate to stay on their feet and not desperate to get a touch so they can fall over!
